Professor Charles Jones has received a research award from the UC Lab Fees Program for the project, "Mitigating and managing extreme wildfire risk in California." Through the project, the research team, which also consists of fellow UCSB Geography Professors Leila Carvalho and Anna Trugman and Bren School Professor Andrew Platinga, will investigate climate change, extreme fire weather, electric power shutoff, and vegetation management policies in California.

The Climate Hazards Center, a research unit within the department, has recently secured funding for two major projects in Africa from SERVIR-AST and NASA, with CHC Associate Researcher Shraddhanand Shukla leading the first project and CHC Research Scientist Frank Davenport leading the latter. In Western Africa, the team will help establish a water deficit monitoring system and forecasting system while they also work on developing a grain harvest forecasting system in Eastern and Southern Africa
